With hundreds of millions of users across nearly every country, Duolingo, an edtech app, tracks what real people choose to study voluntarily.
Across the 154 countries Duolingo tracked in 2025, English was the most-studied language, making it by far the dominant language learners actively pursued.
Spanish ranked first in 26 countries, followed by French in 12. German, despite being Europe’s most widely spoken native language by number of speakers, was the most-studied language on the platform in just two countries.
Together, the four languages account for 194 country-level rankings, with English alone representing 79%.
The Duolingo 2025 Language Report tracks these four languages as the most popular globally in this specific comparison. This table does not include languages such as Arabic, Mandarin, and Portuguese.
