When many people argue about the largest fast food chain, they do so judging by the brand that offers their favourites.
But data do not lie. One way to assess a fast-food chain’s size is to examine its market capitalization.
Market cap is the current market value of a company’s outstanding shares. It’s often used to indicate a company’s size and value relative to its peers.
Today’s visualization ranks the top 30 global fast-food chains by market cap, based on data from Companies Market Cap.
TL;DR
- McDonald’s remains the world’s biggest fast-food chain with a market cap of $221 billion as of December 2025.
- The majority of the world’s largest fast-food chains originated in the United States.
It’s important to note that this explainer focuses only on publicly listed chains, so privately owned giants are not included in this ranking.
Also, because market capitalization fluctuates with daily stock movements, the figures shown here are as of December 12, 2025.
As you see in the table below, the top 30 publicly traded restaurant and fast-food companies worldwide are ranked by market capitalization.

For context, the global fast-food market was $862.05 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach $1.47 trillion by 2028, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.05%.
Whichever fast-food chain dominates the market will leverage this trajectory.
McDonald’s Is the World’s Largest
McDonald’s leads this global ranking with a market cap of over $220 billion, thanks to its scale, brand strength, and highly profitable franchise model.
But this is actually a surprising irony.
Why? For more than a year, McDonald’s has been sounding the alarm about a pullback in restaurant spending, particularly from low-income diners.
That downturn continued during the third quarter of 2025.
US customers made fewer visits to the burger chain in the first three months of this year than they did a year earlier.
Chief executive Chris Kempczinski said customers were “grappling with uncertainty”.
But he assured investors that the firm could “navigate even the toughest of market conditions”.
McDonald’s has been working for months to reignite customer enthusiasm after facing backlash over rising prices, especially from lower-income households.
However, revenue at U.S. McDonald’s outlets that have been open at least a year fell 3.6% in the first three months of 2025 compared with a year earlier.
That is the steepest decline in like-for-like sales in the US since the three months to the end of June 2020, when pandemic restrictions were in place.
Still, they dominate the industry by market cap.
Country With the Most Profitable Fast Food Chains
A quick look at the top publicly traded restaurant chains reveals that the United States leads the world in fast-food profitability.
Most of the companies in the top 30 are headquartered in the U.S. This dominance reflects the maturity of the American fast-food industry, its deep franchising culture, and the global reach of U.S. brands.
Beyond the U.S., only a few countries appear in the ranking. Restaurant Brands International represents Canada, while Yum China represents China, and Zensho Holdings represents Japan.
Although their market size is smaller, these companies demonstrate that fast-growing regional markets and strong local brands can compete globally.
So, What?
These numbers extend past their market cap and rank to affect the meals we grab every day.
For a student rushing between classes, it means easy access to consistent, affordable food that fits a tight schedule.
For nurses or doctors on a short break, these chains offer quick, reliable meals when time is limited.
A bricklayer or construction worker can grab a hearty, filling meal without worrying about it taking too long, while an intern or someone juggling two jobs benefits from widely available chains that are open late and consistently high-quality.
Essentially, these companies dominate because they make meals accessible to millions, no matter your job, schedule, or lifestyle.
ELI5
CompaniesMarketCap ranks the world’s biggest fast-food and restaurant chains by market value, but only publicly listed companies are included.
McDonald’s sits at number one, followed by Chipotle Mexican Grill and Yum China.
Among the top 30, U.S.-founded companies dominate, with Japan and China represented by smaller shares of major brands.
