Curaçao, Biggest Statistical Outlier
Home to just 150,000 people, the Caribbean nation will become the smallest country by population ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup.
Despite being the lowest-ranked team among the four debutants at 81st in the FIFA rankings, Curaçao produced one of the tournament’s most impressive qualifying records: eight wins, one draw and just one defeat, scoring 28 goals along the way.
Their historic campaign is matched by another notable first.
Veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, aged 78, is set to become the oldest coach at the 2026 World Cup, adding another remarkable chapter to Curaçao’s breakthrough.

Uzbekistan’s Different Story
Unlike Curaçao’s population of 150,000, Uzbekistan has a population of around 36 million.
Yet the country’s achievement is historic for another reason (it becomes the first Central Asian nation to qualify for a FIFA World Cup).
The numbers underline just how dominant Uzbekistan was during qualifying.
The team recorded 10 wins, 5 draws, and only 1 defeat, the strongest record among the four debutants. Although they scored 27 goals (one fewer than Curaçao and five fewer than Jordan), they consistently collected points throughout the campaign.
Forward Fayzullaev also etched his name into the history books by scoring Uzbekistan’s first-ever World Cup goal against Colombia.
Jordan’s Qualification Built on Attack
The country recorded the highest goal tally among the four debutants, scoring 32 goals during the final qualifying round.
That total included a record-breaking 32 qualifying goals overall and a hat-trick from striker Olwan that helped secure qualification.
Jordan’s campaign was also the most open.
While Uzbekistan lost only once, Jordan suffered three defeats but compensated with an attack that consistently found the net.
Their reward was a first appearance at football’s biggest tournament, where they also celebrated their first World Cup goal against Austria.
Cabo Verde, meanwhile, showed that defense can be just as important as attack.
The island nation qualified with eight wins, one draw and one defeat, matching Curaçao’s record.

The data challenges a common assumption that expanding the World Cup automatically lowers the standard for qualification.
None of these teams stumbled into the tournament.
Every debutant won at least eight matches during the final qualifying stage. Even the lowest-ranked side, Curaçao, lost only once.

Another notable trend is the growing diversity of international football.
The four debutants come from three different confederations: CONCACAF, AFC, and CAF.
