Lionel Messi became the first man in history to play in six FIFA World Cups when he stepped onto the pitch in Kansas City on June 16, 2026. 

In retrospect, the graphic above shows players with the most appearances in the FIFA World Cup (from 1930 to 2022). 

It is based on the historical records obtained from WorldFootball. The data show that Messi had already led the list with 26 appearances across five tournaments as of 2022. 

TL;DR

• Lionel Messi leads all players in World Cup history with 29 appearances as of the end of the 2026 group stage, up from 26.
• Cristiano Ronaldo has climbed from sixth place (22 appearances in 2022) to joint-second (25 appearances as of June 27, 2026), tying Germany’s Lothar Matthäus for the second-most World Cup appearances in tournament history.

Eight Players in the Record

The data list eight players with 21 or more World Cup appearances from 1930 to 2022. Five of them are retired, and their totals are fixed.

For example: 

• Matthäus holds the second position at 25, unchanged since he played his final match at the 2002 tournament in Korea and Japan. 
• Miroslav Klose of Germany sits third at 24 appearances across four tournaments from 1998 to 2014. 
• Italy’s Paolo Maldini is fourth at 23. 

Germany is the only nation with three players in the top eight (Matthäus, Klose and Seeler) representing three separate generations of elite World Cup players. 

Argentina has two: Maradona at 21 and Messi at 29, separated by 8 appearances and more than three decades of football.

The Gap That Keeps Growing

One of the most dynamic patterns is the distance between first and second place. 

In 2022, Messi led Matthäus by one appearance, a gap thin enough that a bad tournament, an injury or an early exit might have allowed the retired German to remain in serious historical conversation. 

When Messi stepped onto the pitch against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16, 2026, he became the first man in history to play at six World Cups, his 27th career appearance. 

Two more group games followed, taking him to 29. 

The gap between Messi and the second-place cluster of Matthäus and Ronaldo is now four appearances. 

Assuming Argentina advance through the Round of 32 and beyond, that margin will widen further.

Ronaldo’s Rise Through the Table

The most dramatic movement within the list has come from Cristiano Ronaldo. 

The record as of 2022 shows him sixth with 22 appearances, behind Maldini (23), Klose (24) and Matthäus (25) as well as Messi. 

In three group stage matches, Ronaldo passed all three of those retired players to reach 25. 

Ronaldo also became the first player to score at six different World Cups during the 2026 tournament. 

That is a particularly significant scoring milestone that sets him apart from Messi, who did not score at the 2010 tournament. 

What the Knockout Rounds Could Add

If Argentina win the Round of 32, the quarter-final, the semi-final and the final, Messi would reach 33 World Cup appearances, further into uncharted territory than any retirement-age conversation about the record could have predicted when 2022 concluded.
