The visualization shows just how concentrated registered golf participation is across Africa.
South Africa has 145,510 registered golfers, accounting for 73.2% of the total across 29 African countries, according to the R&A Global Golf Participation Report.
The other 28 countries, home to more than one billion people combined, share just 53,229 registered golfers. South Africa also dominates the continent’s golf infrastructure, with 472 of Africa’s 897 golf courses, 52.6% of the total.
Kenya ranks a distant second with 12,099 registered golfers, while Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with about 213 million people, has 11,000. Ethiopia, with a population of roughly 120 million, has just 126 registered golfers.
Across the continent, registered golf participation averages roughly 185 players per million people. South Africa’s rate is dramatically higher, at approximately 2,450 registered golfers per million people.
