Looking at the world’s largest media companies helps us understand who controls the news, movies, and the online spaces we use every day.

It shows how a few large groups shape public ideas, affect the global economy, and influence laws about what people can see and hear.

One effective way to examine this is by looking at the market capitalization of global media powerhouses.

Market cap shows a company’s total worth on the stock market at a given time.

The visualization above narrows down to the top 20 Largest media and press companies, based on data from Companies Market Cap, as of August 17, 2026.

Comcast Leads A Sector Under Pressure

Comcast sits at the top of the media and press ranking with a $93 billion market cap. As the world’s largest cable and broadband provider and the owner of NBCUniversal, it is also one of the most diversified media businesses.

But that $93 billion valuation looks very different when Comcast is placed alongside companies in the broader entertainment industry. It would rank only fifth, behind Netflix, Disney, Sony, and Spotify.

In other words, the world’s largest traditional media company is worth less than 29% of the world’s largest streaming service.

Warner Bros. Discovery follows Comcast at $71.4 billion, taking second place in the media and press ranking. The company owns some of the biggest names in entertainment and news, including CNN, HBO, and Warner Bros.

Canada’s Outsized Presence

Canada places four companies in the global media top 20:

  1. Thomson Reuters (3rd)
  2. BCE Inc. (6th, $21.8 billion)
  3. Rogers Communications (7th, $19.4 billion)
  4. Quebecor (11th, $10.6 billion)

No country other than the United States submits more entries.

Canada’s disproportionate media presence reflects a domestic sector tightly integrated with its telecommunications infrastructure and a bilingual market that generates audience scale relative to a population of approximately 40 million people.

ELI5

The world’s 20 biggest media companies together are worth about $502 billion, which sounds enormous until you realize that Netflix and Disney alone are worth roughly $503 billion.

Comcast leads the ranking at $93 billion, while Canada surprisingly accounts for four of the 20 companies on the list. Thomson Reuters is the world’s most valuable press company, although it is better known today as a Canadian data and information business than as a traditional newspaper publisher.

The ranking also reveals some unexpected comparisons: Paramount, the company behind Top Gun and The Godfather, is worth less than half as much as Roblox.
