With 600,000 annual homicide deaths, humans are the second deadliest animal to their own species.

Like wolves and chimpanzees, humans evolved to live in groups and defend resources or land, which naturally triggers conflict with outsiders.

Snakes vs Sharks

Snakes kill approximately 100,000 people per year, the deadliest purely predatory animal on record. 

The World Health Organization classifies snakebite as a neglected tropical disease, disproportionately killing agricultural workers and children in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia who lack access to antivenom. 

Sharks kill 6 people per year. 

The ratio between snake deaths and shark deaths is approximately 16,667 to one. 

In other words, the animal generating the most cinematic fear and the most conservation headlines kills fewer people annually than almost any other entry in the dataset.

Diseases behind the numbers

Dogs kill approximately 40,000 people per year, almost entirely through rabies transmission rather than bites alone. 

In countries with widespread dog vaccination programs and accessible post-exposure treatment, dog-related deaths approach zero. 

The 40,000 figure is a story about healthcare access in low-income countries where rabies prophylaxis is unavailable or unaffordable.

Freshwater snails kill 14,000 people annually through schistosomiasis. 

It’s a parasitic disease contracted through contact with contaminated water. 

Freshwater snails generate almost no cultural fear. Their death toll is larger than most people’s entire mental model of dangerous wildlife.

Animals that kill through fear vs through disease

Seven of the eleven deadliest animals in the dataset kill through disease transmission rather than physical attack. 

Mosquitoes, freshwater snails, kissing bugs (Chagas disease, 8,000 deaths), sandflies (Leishmaniasis, 5,000), roundworms (Ascariasis, 4,000), tapeworms, and tsetse flies (sleeping sickness, 1,500) all kill through pathogen or parasite transmission.

The animals most dangerous to humans are overwhelmingly the ones too small to be perceived as threats.
