Eighteen days after the outbreak of conflict triggered by US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, Iranian missiles and drones have attacked nine countries in the Middle East.

The death toll within Iran has surpassed 1,400.

For today’s visualization, we use the data from Al Jazeera live tracker to show confirmed casualties across the 12 countries that have been subject to attacks as of Sunday, March 15, at 01:30 GMT.

It was aggregated from the Iran’s Health Ministry, as well as the national defence and interior ministries.

It is, however, important to note that figures may change and will updated as new information becomes available.

What began as a targeted operation has escalated into a widespread regional conflict.

US-Israeli and Iranian confirmed casualties are increasing every hour as both sides exchange strikes in real time.

Across the 12 countries affected by the attacks, there have been a total of 2,371 confirmed deaths and over 24,000 injuries. 

Iran and Lebanon bear the brunt of the casualties, with Iran alone reporting 1,444 deaths and 18,551 injuries, and Lebanon recording 826 deaths and more than 2,000 injuries.

The death toll from US-Israeli strikes far exceeds that of Iranian counterattacks. 

Attacks identified as Israeli or US operations resulted in approximately 2,297 deaths, whereas Iranian strikes caused only 47 fatalities.

This difference stems from the nature of the attacks. 

The Concentration vs. Spread Dynamic

US-Israeli strikes have targeted only three countries, namely, Iran, Lebanon, and Iraq. 

These operations account for nearly all the deaths from blue-coded attacks, including 1,444 in Iran, 850 in Lebanon, and 29 in Iraq. 

These attacks are part of ongoing efforts to counter regional threats and influence.

Iranian retaliation has been deliberately dispersed. 

Red-coded strikes have affected at least nine countries

This broader spread indicates a strategy aimed at exerting regional pressure.

This contrast reveals two very different strategies. The US and Israel are employing precision, concentrated force to weaken Iran’s military and its main proxy in Lebanon. 

On the other hand, Iran is retaliating by spreading its actions across the region, seeking to maximize political pressure and deter further escalation by involving America’s allies.

Anomalies Worth Watching

Israel exhibits the highest injury-to-death ratio in the conflict, with only 15 fatalities but 3,369 injuries. 

Its advanced layered air-defense systems, consisting of the Iron Dome, Arrow, and David’s Sling, intercept nearly all incoming missiles, converting potential mass casualties into injuries from shrapnel and debris.

Iraq is unique as the only country facing threats on two fronts, having suffered both US-Israeli strikes with 29 killed and Iranian retaliation, leaving dozens injured. 

It remains caught between the two warring sides due to its geographic position and the presence of Shia militias aligned with Tehran.

The US Military is treated as its own separate casualty category, not under any specific country. 

Thirteen American service members were killed, and about 140 to 150 were injured, indicating direct Iranian attacks on US bases, portraying American forces as a distinct frontline.

Cyprus stands out as the oddest case. 

Despite a confirmed Iranian attack, it reports zero casualties. 

The strike appears to have caused no deaths or injuries, raising questions about whether it was merely a symbolic warning shot or missed its intended target entirely.

Gulf State Pattern

Iran intentionally attacked six Gulf states in a coordinated missile and drone assault. The affected countries include Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman.

A common factor links all these countries. This is because each hosts significant US military infrastructure that supports American operations throughout the Middle East.

Bahrain houses the US Fifth Fleet headquarters, while Qatar runs Al Udeid Air Base, the Pentagon’s largest forward base in the region. 

The UAE hosts Al Dhafra Air Base, a crucial hub for US drones and fighter jets. 

Additionally, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Oman provide logistics hubs, training facilities, and strategic access points.

By attacking all these targets simultaneously, Iran aimed to punish America’s Gulf allies, increase the costs of supporting Israel and US military actions, and compel Washington to defend multiple fronts at the same time.
