Average IQ of India: 17,000 Indians Took a Test

Brainpower shapes nations as much as borders or resources.

In 2025, India’s average IQ was measured at 99.08, just a hair below the global benchmark of 100. That keeps India close to the world pack, though still trailing the high-scoring East and Southeast Asian countries leading the charts.

TL;DR

  • India’s average IQ is 99.08 based on 17,114 participants as of 2025.
  • China, South Korea, and Japan still lead in average IQ ranking among Asian countries.

NOTE: The IQ test was conducted by the 2025 International IQ Test. The global platform uses the conventional IQ scale (mean 100, standard deviation 15), so India’s 99.08 sits very close to the global average.

The caveat is that internet access, who sees the test, language familiarity, education, and motivation to take an online quiz all shape who is counted.

Average IQ of India

It’s worth noting that various ranking figures exist. For example, a 2025 section of the Times of India reports a contrasting IQ score of 76.2 for India.

However, the International IQ Test’s result is based on quizzing 17,114 Indians.

All these factors tend to shape the environment that influences such test scores. So, it’s not about “smartness”, but how different conditions enable people to perform on this kind of test.

India’s Average IQ Dropped YoY

Compared with the prior year, India’s average IQ was 99.15, based on 68,338 participants. This means there’s been a decrease of -0.07 points.

Technically, there is a year-on-year (YoY) drop, but not by much. Considering the large number of people taking the test in previous years, such a small shift (less than 10 points) is expected due to sampling variation rather than a “real change” in average intelligence.

The data also show that most countries (about 84.8%) have less than a 2-point year-to-year change in their average IQ scores.

This means that this level of variation is common and doesn’t necessarily indicate a major concern.

India’s reported mean is several IQ points below that of leading East Asian countries (for example, China: 107), a substantial difference on the IQ scale.

However, because the platform’s data are drawn from self-selected online test-takers, differences can reflect not only education, health, and nutrition but also who had the opportunity, interest, and language ability to take the test.

Larger samples (China, Japan) yield tighter estimates; smaller samples (some countries) increase uncertainty.

ELI5: The Average IQ in India is 99.08. How Come, and What Does It Mean?

Imagine an IQ score as a game in which the global “middle score” is set to 100. India’s average IQ is 99.08, which is almost the same as scoring 99 points on a 100-point scale

These scores don’t mean Indians are less smart; they just show how test-takers performed on this particular puzzle-style exam.

It also shows the country is in a good spot compared to others. The small changes in the numbers mostly reflect differences in conditions and samples rather than a measure of “intelligence.”
