The World’s Biggest Food Producers, Crop by Crop

Table of Contents

The world grows thousands of crops, but a tiny handful carry the planet.

Four crops alone account for half of all primary crop production, and for most of them, three countries supply a large share of the global total.

TL;DR

  • Just four crops make up about half of global primary crop production: sugar cane (20%), maize (13%), and wheat and rice (8% each).
  • The United States and Brazil together produce 42% of the world’s maize; China is second at 23%.
  • Asia leads rice production, with India, China, and Bangladesh as the top three.

Production figures here come from FAOSTAT, the FAO’s crop and livestock production database, which is the standard global reference for what countries grow.

The 4 Crops That Carry The World

For each major crop, the top three producers combined account for a large share of the world total, from roughly 42% for wheat up to around 90% for oil palm fruit.

That concentration is why a bad harvest in one country can move global prices.

Where the U.S. Leads, and Where It Doesn’t

The United States alone grows about 32% of the world’s maize, and together with Brazil accounts for more than four in every ten ears grown on Earth.

That single fact ripples through global food, animal feed, and biofuel markets.

Wheat and rice tell the opposite story.

China and India lead wheat, with Russia third, and India and China alone grow more than half the world’s rice.

The U.S. is a significant wheat exporter but a minor producer by global share.

The pattern reflects geography and climate: maize thrives in the temperate Americas, rice in the wet tropics of Asia, wheat across the temperate belts of Asia and Europe.

Why Concentration is a Risk

When three countries supply most of a staple, the world’s food supply inherits their weather, their politics, and their export decisions.

A drought in the U.S. Corn Belt or an export restriction in a major rice grower is not a local event. It is a global price shock.

ELI5

Most of the food the world grows comes from just four plants: sugar cane, corn, wheat, and rice.

And for each one, only a few countries grow most of it. The U.S. grows a huge share of the world’s corn, while India and China grow most of the rice.
