In what is a subjective concept, ranking the best cities by their food has always been left for rating platforms to justify.

Every year, TasteAtlas, the global atlas of traditional dishes, compiles a list of the most rated dishes worldwide from tourists and its platform users. This serves as an index.

In this article, we focus on the top cities whose local cuisines have earned the highest ratings.

TL;DR

  • Naples, Italy, is crowned the world’s best city for food, boasting a perfect 5.0 rating on TasteAtlas.
  • The list of the best cities in the world to eat in is based on the average rating of the best traditional dishes, food products, and beverages in each city, as rated by the TasteAtlas audience.

Cities in Italy Dominate

Naples, Italy (Rank 1), takes the crown with its legendary Pizza Margherita, showing how a single dish, rooted in local heritage, can define a city’s food identity worldwide.

Generally, Italy dominates the rankings with nine cities, including Milan (2), Bologna (3), Florence (4), Rome (6), Turin (9), Modena (34), Lucca (42), Mantua (43), and Venice, which falls just outside the top 50.

Dishes such as Tagliatelle al Ragù (Bologna) and Bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florence) highlight the rich, authentic flavors that have stood the test of time.

Europe broadly maintains a strong presence.

France’s Paris (7) and Marseille (13) are celebrated for Crème Brûlée and Bouillabaisse, demonstrating how refined techniques and local ingredients can propel cities into international culinary recognition.

Austria’s Vienna (8), Belgium’s Brussels (29), and the Netherlands’ Amsterdam (37) also feature.

African Dishes Absent in Top 50

Notably, Africa and much of South America are mainly absent from the list.

Despite global recognition of countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Morocco, no cities make the top 50, highlighting a gap between culinary influence and global ranking, suggesting room for greater international acknowledgment.

ELI5: World’s Best Cities for Food

Some cities are just magical when it comes to food, and TasteAtlas ranked the top 50 in the world. At the very top is Naples, Italy, famous for its pizza, and Italy overall dominates the list with nine cities.

Other countries, such as India, China, Japan, France, and the U.S., also boast cities renowned for their iconic dishes.

Essentially, if a city has food people can’t stop talking about, it’s on the map.
