There is a crucial difference between a big economy and a rich one.
Total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) tells you the size of a country’s economy.
GDP per capita, which divides that output by population, tells you how prosperous its people are, and the two rankings look nothing alike.
TL;DR
- Luxembourg has the world’s highest GDP per capita at about $141,000, while the US, the largest economy overall, ranks around eighth per person at roughly $89,000.
- Small states like Luxembourg, Ireland, and Switzerland top the per-capita list, each producing more than $100,000 per resident.
- A country like India can have the world’s fifth-largest economy while ranking far down the per-capita list, because its output is spread across 1.4 billion people.
The figures here come from the IMF’s World Economic Outlook and the World Bank.

Many of the top per-capita spots are held by small countries with specialized financial sectors, whose incoming financial flows inflate GDP without fully reflecting productivity or living standards.
That is why the per-capita list is dominated by tiny, wealthy states rather than the economic giants.

Why the distinction matters
Confusing the two is a common and costly error.
A large total GDP means a country has economic weight and market size.
A high GDP per capita means its people are, on average, well off.
Generating national wealth and distributing it to people are distinctly different economic challenges, and even GDP per capita can mislead, since a figure inflated by cross-border commuters or corporate headquarters does not always reach ordinary households.
The U.S. is the richest large country by GDP per capita, at about $89,000, higher than any other nation with a population above 10 million.
The UK and Canada sit comfortably in the upper tier per person, well above the global average, even though they rank lower than tiny financial hubs.
The durable lesson is that when comparing prosperity, per-capita GDP beats total GDP, and even then it is the population’s typical experience, not the headline, that matters most.
ELI5
A country can have a giant economy but still be poor per person if it has lots of people, like India. And a tiny country can be very rich per person, like Luxembourg. Total size and per-capita richness are two different things.
