Where E-commerce Is Growing Fastest; The Data

Table of Contents

The biggest e-commerce markets and the fastest-growing ones are not the same places.

The mature giants are slowing down, while the fastest growth is happening in markets that are just coming online.

TL;DR

  • India has the highest projected e-commerce growth rate among the top 20 markets through 2030.
  • Japan and Indonesia are also among the fastest-growing, with annual growth rates above 7.7%.
  • Mature markets like the U.S. are growing more slowly, with penetration below 16%, leaving room in categories like grocery and B2B.

The growth figures here come from eMarketer, Statista, and UNCTAD.

The Indian market, currently valued around $125 billion, is growing faster than any other top market, while the U.S., though far larger, is expanding more slowly.

This is the classic pattern: the biggest markets grow in%age terms more slowly precisely because they are already large.

Why the frontier is moving

Fast growth concentrates where the basics are just arriving: smartphones, digital payments, and delivery networks.

As those spread through South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa, first-time online shoppers drive rapid%age gains.

The mature markets, by contrast, have already converted their easy customers and easy categories, so their growth now depends on cracking the hard ones like fresh groceries.

The countries where online shopping is growing fastest are ones just getting phones and delivery, like India. The big markets like the U.S. and China are already large, so they grow more slowly now.
