Nintendo dominates the all-time list of best-selling video game consoles, placing nine products in the top 20.
This compares with six from Sony and three from Microsoft.
The visualization above presents video game consoles that have sold at least 30 million units worldwide, either directly to consumers or through retail channels. This is based on companies’ data compiled on Wikipedia.
Nintendo’s nine entries span four decades, from the original NES, launched in 1983, to the Switch in 2017, and include both home and handheld consoles.
Microsoft’s three entries are all home consoles, with their combined sales reaching 177 million units. That total is only slightly higher than the 160 million units Sony’s PlayStation 2 sold alone.
Nintendo’s dominance becomes even clearer when you combine the figures together. Its nine consoles in the top 20 have sold 832 million units in total.
