Data centers are facilities designed to store and compute vast amounts of data efficiently and securely. The global data center count, as of June 2026, sits at roughly 11,600 facilities across 109 countries. 

The United States holds 4,423 of them. China, the world’s second-largest economy and America’s primary technology rival, has 369. That 12-to-1 ratio reflects fundamental differences in how both countries have approached cloud infrastructure, private sector technology investment, and data sovereignty. 

China has pursued a more centralized, state-directed model. The US has enabled private cloud giants to scale. The result is an infrastructure gap that shapes every conversation about which country leads in artificial intelligence.
