Humanity is not spread evenly across the planet.
People cluster tightly in a handful of regions, along coasts and river valleys, while enormous stretches of the Earth’s surface sit almost empty.
The map of where people live is one of the most lopsided pictures in all of demography.
TL;DR
- Nearly 60% of the world’s 8 billion people live in Asia, and India and China together account for 35% of the world’s population.
- The concentration is extreme at the fine scale. The densely populated areas span only about 1% of the Earth’s land, yet nearly half the world’s population lives within them.
- Density varies wildly. In 2024, the world averaged 62.6 people per square kilometer, but Monaco reached 25,927 while Greenland recorded just 0.1.

Why people cluster where they do
People settle where land can support them.
Southern Asia is the most densely populated sub-region on Earth, at around 322 people per square kilometer, because its fertile river plains, particularly the Indo-Gangetic, can support large populations.
The same logic explains why humanity hugs coastlines, temperate zones and major rivers.
Water, arable soil and a workable climate draw people in, and everywhere those are scarce, people are too.
The empty three-quarters
For all the talk of a crowded planet, most of it is nearly uninhabited.
Deserts like the Sahara, rainforests like the Amazon and the Congo, the frozen expanses of Siberia and Greenland, and the Australian outback hold almost no one.
These regions make the global average density misleading, since the human world is really a scatter of crowded pockets across a mostly empty surface.

People are not spread out evenly. Most of the world lives in Asia, and if you drew the crowded parts of the planet, they would fit in about 1 out of every 100 patches of land.
The rest- the deserts, jungles, and frozen places- is almost empty, because people live where there is water, good soil, and comfortable weather.
