In cities like Tel Aviv-Yafo and Singapore, dining and grocery prices have increased by 4-6% due to rising import costs, making them expensive, with cost-of-living indices of 86.7. The wealthy residents here are cushioned by high purchasing power. 

In contrast, mid-tier cities like Dubai and Tokyo have a cost index of around 50-60, with stable inflation rates of 2-3%. The local wages are decent, keeping things balanced.

Asian Cities With the Lowest Cost of Living Index

Living in India and Pakistan is becoming more affordable for young people, with rent under $8 and monthly costs ranging from $300 to $600. 

However, power outages and rising fuel prices are still challenges. 

South Asia is budget-friendly for expats; geopolitical pressures in East and Middle Eastern countries could lead to 3-5% increases in transportation and essential costs, thereby raising the cost of living in cities across the region.

Housing & Rent Trends: Cost Pressures in Major Cities

The average cost of renting and buying a house in Asia varies significantly by city and country.

According to Global Property Guide, a one-bedroom apartment in Singapore can average around $4,590 per month in rent and over $16,000 per square meter to buy, whereas in Jakarta, a one-bedroom might rent for about $698 per month and cost around $1,726 per square meter to buy. 

Major hubs like Singapore and Hong Kong have very high costs, and it shows in Numbeo’s rent index:

Housing and rent in Asia’s top cities are intense. 

Singapore’s rent index reached 77.3 (NYC = 100), while Hong Kong’s is at 62.9. 

This is due to land shortages and a rush of investors, as reported by Mercer’s Cost of Living Survey.

Dubai (60.9) and Abu Dhabi (44.0) are also under pressure from expatriate populations and oil wealth, causing inflation to reach 4-5% while salaries stagnate, according to ECA International.

In contrast, Delhi keeps rent hikes to just 2-3% thanks to government controls and new developments, offering some relief.

In places like South Korea and the UAE, which rely on oil, people are facing 5-7% cost increases due to rising fuel prices. 

This results in their monthly transport costs exceeding $100, all while inflation stands at 4%.

On the other hand, India and Pakistan fare better with low costs (17-20 on the index). 

Thanks to new transit projects, the increase was only 2-3 percent. 

Meanwhile, tech-savvy Singapore and Hong Kong are stabilizing utility prices with technology. However, both cities still face serious traffic issues, with transport costs of around $80 and $74, respectively, according to Expatistan.

For expats in South Asia, getting around is still affordable, but places in East Asia and the Middle East really need fresh ideas to keep up with rising pressures.

The value of currencies in Asia, such as the PHP, KRW, and INR, dropped by 5-10% according to the MUFG Research Portal, making food and fuel significantly pricier. 

Conflicts in the Red Sea have also disrupted supply chains, resulting in a 7-15% increase in transport costs in places like Singapore. 

While India’s subsidy policy curbs inflation, other East Asian countries are struggling more. 

Additionally, global oil and grain prices are fluctuating by 4-6%, making life even more expensive and widening the cost gap across the region.
