TikTok Shop did not exist in the United States three years ago.
By 2026, it is projected to outsell Target, Best Buy, Costco, and Kroger individually in U.S. ecommerce.
Based on data from eMarketer’s November 2025 forecast, the infographic above focuses on projected sales for TikTok Shop retail e-commerce up to next year.
According to The Wall Street Journal, TikTok Shop generated $4.9 billion in U.S. sales in the first quarter of 2026 alone, nearly doubling from the same period a year earlier.
The eMarketer forecast, published in November 2025, projected full-year 2026 U.S. TikTok Shop retail e-commerce sales of $23.41 billion.
A $4.9 billion Q1, in retail’s weakest seasonal quarter, implies an annual pace that could approach or exceed that forecast before the higher-volume second half of the year arrives.
TL;DR
- TikTok Shop generated $4.9 billion in U.S. sales in Q1 2026 alone, nearly doubling year-over-year.
- It suggests the full-year eMarketer forecast of $23.41 billion may already be conservative
- The platform went from $1.50 billion in its first U.S. year (2023) to a projected $28.56 billion by 2027. TikTok Shop now commands 22.8% of all U.S. social commerce in 2026.

Trajectory With No Historical Parallel
The eMarketer data shows five years of TikTok Shop U.S. sales: $1.50 billion in 2023, $7.61 billion in 2024, $15.82 billion in 2025, $23.41 billion in 2026, and $28.56 billion in 2027.
That is a 19-fold increase in four years from a standing start.
IN COMPARISON:
- Amazon grew from approximately $1.5 billion to $28 billion in annual revenue over roughly seven years in the early 2000s.
- TikTok Shop is replicating it in less than half the time, in a single commerce category, on a platform whose primary purpose is short-form video entertainment rather than retail.
- Instagram Shopping launched in 2018 and has not replicated TikTok Shop’s trajectory despite Meta’s eight years of investment.
The platform launched U.S. commerce operations in September 2023.
It captured 10.6% of all U.S. social commerce in its first full year. By 2025, that share had risen to 18.2%.
eMarketer projects 22.8% in 2026 and 24.1% in 2027.
No social commerce product in American history has achieved that market concentration from a standing start in a comparable time.
Why the Model Works
TikTok Shop’s conversion engine is structurally different from every prior social commerce attempt.
Products appear inside video content that users are already watching, embedded in creator demonstrations, live selling events, and algorithmic recommendations that treat the product and the entertainment as a single experience.
The line between watching and buying is dissolved rather than reduced.
Live commerce is the format driving a disproportionate share of that growth.
Creators sell products via real-time video streams, a format that generates $500 billion or more annually in China’s established live commerce market.
In the United States, live commerce is in its early stages of development.
TikTok Shop is its primary commercial vehicle, and its Q1 2026 growth rate suggests American consumer adoption is accelerating rather than plateauing.
The Competitive Response
Meta has launched live shopping initiatives across Instagram and Facebook. Amazon has invested in creator commerce programs.
Both are directly targeting the format that TikTok Shop has demonstrated works for American consumers.
At 22.8% of projected U.S. social commerce in 2026, TikTok Shop’s share gains are also beginning to decelerate: 10.6%, 18.2%, 22.8%, and 24.1%.
The platform is approaching a social commerce concentration ceiling, and any further growth will need to come from expanding the total social commerce market rather than simply capturing existing share from competitors.
The $28.56 billion projected for 2027 represents approximately 1.3% of total projected U.S. retail ecommerce.
ELI5
TikTok added a shop to its app in 2023, and Americans started buying things while watching videos. In just the first three months of 2026, people spent $4.9 billion, nearly twice as much as the same time last year. By 2027, TikTok Shop is expected to generate $28.56 billion in the U.S. alone, more than Target or Best Buy sells online. It grew faster than Amazon ever did.
