Cups of Coffee Consumed In a Lifetime (1)

The coffee culture continues to grow, primarily driven by health trends and Gen Z consumers.

Grand View Research even showed that the coffee production market is valued at around $473 billion.

However, there are some places where people barely drink coffee. While there are places where people consume more than four cups daily.

TL;DR

  • Luxembourg ranks first globally in coffee consumption in 2025, averaging more than 5 cups per person per day.
  • Despite being major consumers in absolute terms, large countries such as the United States, Japan, and Brazil rank much lower per capita.

The data for this explainer is sourced from Cafely. We focus on the top 50 countries by their daily coffee consumption per capita in 2025.

As you can see, countries like Luxembourg, Finland, Sweden, and Norway consume the most coffee because coffee is part of daily life and social culture.

What’s interesting is that Luxembourg has virtually no native cocoa bean production.

In 2024, imports of coffee, tea, and spices into the country reached around $153.8 million, according to Trading Economics.

Brazil, the world’s biggest coffee producer, lands mid-pack at 18th with 1.58 cups per day.

Where People Consume Less Coffee

Ethiopia ranks last among the 50 countries analyzed, consuming just 0.46 cups per person per day.

Countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Honduras, and Saudi Arabia consume less coffee per person because it is not a primary daily beverage.

In many of these places, people may prefer tea, traditional drinks, or energy beverages, which reduces daily coffee intake.

Lower consumption can also be caused by income levels, coffee prices similar to earnings, and cultural habits.

Even in coffee-producing countries like Ethiopia and Vietnam, much of the coffee is exported, while locals consume smaller amounts.

Nordic and Western European Countries Love Coffee

Nordic and Western European countries dominate the list with high per-capita coffee consumption.

In these regions, coffee is a daily cultural habit, consumed multiple times a day at home, at work, and in social settings.

Another pattern is that many high-consumption countries have small populations, which moves per-capita figures higher even if total national consumption is not massive.

Many parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America are low on the list, as tea and other traditional beverages are common there, as are exports.

Affordability of Coffee Matters Too

Many high-consumption countries, especially in Northern Europe, have moderate-to-high prices per cup yet still drink a lot of coffee.

A good example is in Denmark, where the average cup of coffee costs $5.40, yet it ranks 6th among the world’s top coffee consumers.

This means that in these places, coffee is a habit, and people are willing to pay more for it.

Some countries with low coffee prices still have low consumption, mainly because coffee is not the preferred daily drink or is not produced mainly for export.

When coffee is part of everyday life, people drink it despite the cost, while low prices alone do not guarantee high consumption.

ELI5: Coffee Consumption Around the World

Northern Europe remains the global center of coffee drinking. Luxembourg leads the world with 5.31 cups per day per person. This is far ahead of larger economies.

Also, countries with smaller populations can drink more coffee per person, thereby raising their per-capita consumption.
