The Big Red N
Based on subscriber numbers, Netflix leads the global video streaming market with approximately 301.6 million subscribers, placing it well ahead of all competitors.
According to the company’s report, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) became its largest region by subscribers, while the US and Canada (UCAN) also saw strong Q4 gains.
The streaming platform even generated $39 billion in revenue in 2024.
Warner Bros Acquisition Saga
What looks like a simple ranking table of streaming platforms is now being tested by one of the most consequential media battles in recent years.
With Netflix ranked first by subscribers, HBO Max fourth, and Paramount+ eighth, the fight over Warner Bros. Discovery could redraw the global streaming landscape.
For Paramount+, acquiring Warner Bros. and, by extension, HBO Max would have been transformative.
Absorbing a platform with roughly 128 million subscribers could have pushed Paramount+ out of the lower tier and closer to the industry’s top five.
Netflix, by contrast, entered the saga from a position of overwhelming strength.
At the time of this report, the Warner board backed Netflix’s $72 billion bid over Paramount’s aggressive $77.9 billion offer.
Regional Pattern
Netflix, an American company, maintains the top spot worldwide, with particularly strong adoption in North America, Europe, and Latin America.
Amazon Prime Video, also U.S.-based, follows a similar pattern.
The platform benefits from integration with Amazon’s e-commerce ecosystem and strong penetration in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.
Regional specialization is more pronounced among other platforms.
Disney+ performs strongly in markets where its franchises resonate, such as the U.S., Europe, and parts of the Asia-Pacific.
Meanwhile, HBO Max, tied to Warner Bros., has a strong U.S. and Latin American presence but less global reach.
Tencent Video, headquartered in China, dominates the domestic market due to government-backed content regulations and limited international exposure.
ELI5: Biggest Video Streaming Services
Based on subscribers count alone, Netflix is the number one video streaming platform with 301,630,000 subscribers, far ahead of Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, and Tencent Video.
But more importantly, different platforms lead in different regions.
