Most Peaceful Nations On Earth_DataExplained

Two of the world’s most dangerous conflicts were negotiated last week in the same country and it’s the 5th most peaceful nation on Earth.

Switzerland is simultaneously hosting the third round of Russia-Ukraine peace talks and parallel US-Iran nuclear negotiations in Geneva, continuing a 70-year tradition that has made the neutral Alpine nation the default venue for resolving global crises.

Since 1954, Switzerland has hosted at least 13 major peace summits, from Cold War nuclear arms treaties to Middle East ceasefire.

It has earned its reputation as the world’s diplomatic safe haven despite (or perhaps because of) its ranking among the globe’s most tranquil countries.

Today’s visuals show the most peaceful and troubled nations by their global peace index.

TL;DR

  • Switzerland ranks as the 5th most peaceful country in the world.
  • The Russia-Ukraine war is in its fourth year, with Switzerland being the host of the third major negotiation attempt.

For this data, we got insights from the Institute For Economics and Peace (IEP)’s Global Peace Index (GPI).

The Global Peace Index evaluates countries using “23 indicators” grouped into three broad categories:

  • Societal safety and security
  • Ongoing domestic and international conflict
  • Militarization

These indicators measure factors like crime rates, political stability, relations with neighboring countries, military expenditure, and the scale of internal or external conflicts.

Switzerland ranks the 5th most peaceful country in the world, behind Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, and Austria.

The Numbers Behind the Neutrality

Switzerland’s reputation for diplomacy is rooted in 209 years of officially recognized neutrality, going back to the 1815 Treaty of Paris, when European powers acknowledged the country’s neutral status.

Switzerland has not participated in a foreign war, building a strong identity while setting its territory as common ground for dialogue.

Geneva hosts roughly 200 international organizations, making it one of the world’s most important diplomatic hubs.

It is home to the United Nations’ European headquarters and also the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Switzerland’s effectiveness as a diplomatic hub starts with its legal neutrality framework, which is seen in the Hague Conventions, stating the duties of neutral states during conflicts.

The country is not a member of NATO and does not belong to any military alliance, though it participates in NATO’s Partnership for Peace program for limited cooperation.

Located in the heart of Europe, Switzerland is easily accessible from major global capitals and offers high-security facilities, modern airports, and discreet meeting venues, particularly in Geneva and Zurich.

Also, Switzerland has long acted as a “protecting power” between countries that do not maintain diplomatic relations.

The Current Stakes

The Russia-Ukraine war, now in its fourth year, has a fragile diplomatic phase.

Meanwhile, the U.S.–Iran talks focus on nuclear limits and regional stability, amid renewed tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route.

The negotiations involve deep mistrust and geopolitical risk, making neutral ground essential.

Switzerland’s setting offers a venue both sides can accept without appearing politically compromised.

ELI5

Switzerland is presently ranked the 5th most peaceful country in the world, which explains why it is often chosen as a meeting place for global negotiations.

Its central location in Europe makes it easy to reach from major capitals, and it provides secure venues and reliable infrastructure.

As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fourth year, Switzerland has stepped in to host the third major round of negotiations, showing how countries in conflict turn to neutral ground when trust is low.
