Revenue in the South American eggs market is projected to reach $13.94 billion by 2025, according to Statista.

The B2C retail at-home consumption market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 9.72%.

But just how many eggs do people consume in various South American countries?

TL;DR

  • The average egg consumption per capita in South America is approximately 12 kg per person per year.
  • Paraguay is South America’s top consumer, with an annual egg consumption of 17.7 kg per person.
  • Compared with other continents, South America’s 12 kg is lower than that of Europe, Asia, and North America, but higher than that of Africa.

The data for this visualization comes from the World Population Review, gathered from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, with the latest data available as of 2022.

Per-capita egg consumption refers to the average number of kilograms of eggs consumed annually per person in a given country or region.

“Context Matters”

This data does not include eggs used for non-food purposes. Also, countries with total consumption less than 1,000 tonnes are assigned a placeholder consumption value of 0.

Total consumption values are presented in tonnes, also known as metric tons. One tonne = 1,000 kg, or approximately 2,204.6 lbs.

As you can see, there’s a clear divide between South America’s agricultural powerhouses and smaller economies.

Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay dominate due to intensive poultry farming, favorable feed production, and high consumer integration of eggs into daily diets.

Brazil, Colombia, and Peru maintain mid-range figures that align with the expansion of middle-class consumption and urban food demand.

In contrast, Guyana and Suriname record minimal per-capita intake, reflecting narrower markets and import dependence.

What’s Driving Egg Consumption in South America?

Rapid urbanization and a growing middle class have increased demand for quick, protein-rich foods, making eggs a staple for millions of city dwellers.

In Argentina and Uruguay, where per-capita consumption is high, eggs have evolved beyond breakfast.

They now feature in pastries, sauces, and protein-forward snacks. This culinary versatility sustains steady demand even during economic fluctuations.

Strong local production also drives affordability.

Across South America, eggs remain a low-cost, high-value protein that unites households across income levels.
