Average Height for Uk Men: What the Data Shows (cm & ft)

Aside from notable exceptions like Britain’s height wonder, Paul Sturgess, who is 7ft 7 in tall, male adults in the United Kingdom, on average, measure 176 cm (5 ft 9 in).

More interestingly, data suggest that age, improvements in nutrition, and living standards make differences between generations more significant than the changes we see from year to year.

TL;DR

  • The average male height in England was 176.2 cm in 2022, broadly stable compared with recent years.
  • Younger men (16-24) recorded 178.2 cm, while men over 55 recorded modest gains.
  • The data is consistent with a plateau in male stature rather than any major shift.

Data for this insight is fetched from England’s National Health Service database.

The 2024-published Health Survey for England has been tracking the trend since 1993. The latest available tracking for year-on-year average growth is for 2022.

Note: The 2021 figures are derived from self-reported heights adjusted using correction factors, as COVID-19 precautions prevented physical measurement that year. The 2022 figures are based on direct physical measurement. NHS Digital advises that these datasets are not directly comparable. Year-on-year changes shown here should be interpreted with this caveat in mind.

Trend Suggests Youngest Male Adults In UK Are Plateauing In Stature

Breaking down the data by age groups between 2021 and 2022 offers further insight.

The youngest group, men aged 16 to 24, actually saw a very slight decline, from 178.8 cm to 178.2 cm.

Although a fall of six millimetres is marginal, it raises questions about whether today’s youngest adults are plateauing in stature after decades of gains through the 20th century.

Once nutrition, healthcare, and living conditions reach a high standard, there is less room for growth in average height, so small dips are often signs of levelling rather than deterioration.

Men in their 30s and 40s maintained a steady height of around 177.6–177.7 cm, indicating no significant change in this core working-age population.

For men in their 50s, however, the figures show a modest increase from 176.1 cm to 176.6 cm. This may reflect improved health and nutritional conditions during their formative years, which continue to pay dividends decades later.

On Average, UK Men Enter Old Age Taller

According to the data, men over 75 also show a slight rise, from 171.1 cm to 171.4 cm.

This is intriguing because older adults are often expected to experience a loss of height with age due to spinal compression and changes in bone density.

The increase in average height here likely reflects a generational effect (Today’s over-75s were born into slightly better conditions than their predecessors, and so they enter old age taller on average).

What these shifts collectively illustrate is the difference between individual and population-level trends.

One man may shrink a little with age, but the group average for older men can rise if younger, taller cohorts gradually replace shorter ones in that age bracket.

It is also worth reflecting on what has not changed. There is no dramatic fall that would suggest worsening childhood nutrition or widespread health crises in the UK.

Neither is there a sudden leap.

Have UK Men Been Getting Taller Over the Past Decades?

A 2017 report published by the University of Oxford presented findings from archaeological excavations spanning 2,000 years of English history

It showed that heights rose under Roman rule (200–410 AD) due to improved sanitation and food, then declined after 600 as towns shrank and disease spread.

The Norman Conquest and a medieval warm spell boosted stature to 173 cm by the 1100s, but famine, colder weather, and the Black Death caused fluctuations.

Between 1400 and 1650, heights peaked again at 173–174 cm, before declining during the hardship of the industrial era.

Since the 19th century, average height has surged, reaching 177 cm by 1970.

ELI5: What’s the Average Height of UK Men?

If you lined up every grown man in the UK by height, the group in the middle would be about 176 cm tall, which is equivalent to 5 ft 9 in.

While some will be taller and others shorter, this middle number represents the average.

Younger men in their twenties tend to be slightly taller, while older men may experience a slight decrease in height with age. So, if you’re around 5’9″ in the UK, you’re on target for “average.”
