With a total of 13 peace awards across the continent, it’s clear that Africa is focused on resolving conflicts. 

Its rich storytelling culture has earned it 9 Nobel Prizes in Literature. 

Following Tanzania’s first and only award in 2021, there have been no new African winners from 2022 to 2025, according to the Nobel records.

Regional Patterns

Unfortunately, many areas in Central and West Africa haven’t produced as many winners as others, and no African region has won a Nobel Prize in Economics. 

In Literature, there are nine winners, with Wole Soyinka taking the prize in 1986, highlighting Africa’s rich storytelling tradition. 

For the sciences, there are eight laureates, spread across three in Chemistry, three in Medicine, and two in Physics. 

However, there haven’t been any wins in Economics or other categories as of 2025.

Do the Chances of African Winners Get Slimmer? 

Africa suffers from a systemic brain drain, with skilled professionals leaving for better opportunities abroad. 

This migration of talent harms local innovation, as seen with some South African-born scientists winning Nobel Prizes in other countries, such as Sydney Brenner, who shared the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with his Western counterparts. 

Limited funding and poor infrastructure also hinder research.

These factors highlight the significant barriers to growth on the continent.
