A striking realization from this data is that taxi fares are really expensive in Switzerland.
What’s odd, really, is that Switzerland’s taxi monopoly exists despite having excellent public transport (trains, trams, buses).
This suggests taxi fares aren’t set by market competition but by regulatory pricing designed to protect traditional taxi operators from competition.
Why Scandinavian Taxis Cost What They Do
Four of the top 10 cities are Nordic: Oslo ($19.8), Copenhagen ($17.1), Stockholm ($15.0), and Helsinki ($12.5).
Iceland’s Reykjavik ($13.0) is also in the mix.
The pattern here is the addition of high labor costs, strong taxi driver unions, and low competition.
According to Paylab, the total gross salary for the position of Taxi driver in Sweden ranges from $3,115 to $9,685 per month (28,730 to 89,037 SEK).
Currency Matters More Than Local Prices
Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey all faced currency crises in 2023-2024, with their currencies losing 30-50% of value.
This kept dollar-denominated taxi fares flat but devastated local affordability.
Cairo’s $0.80 average taxi fare in the dataset is a bargain for tourists but increasingly unaffordable for Egyptians earning devalued pounds.
One Huge Caveat
The data measures traditional metered taxis, not Uber, Lyft, Bolt, or even Grab.
This explains why traditional taxi ridership is collapsing in cities that allow ride-hailing services to compete.
ELI5: Cost of Taxi Trip In Major Cities
Swiss cities (Zurich $23.50, Geneva $23.30) have the world’s most expensive taxis, which are 50x more than Karachi ($0.50) or Cairo ($0.80).
European cities dominate the top 30 (73%), while developing nations fill the bottom.
Swiss taxi fares rose 15% (2020-2025) despite low inflation, while taxi fares in Mumbai and Cairo remained flat due to weak currencies.
High fares reflect strong labor unions and regulations blocking Uber/Lyft competition.
For locals, expensive taxis signal high wages; for tourists, cheap taxis reveal economic inequality.
