The 2026 World Cup featured several notably older coaches, with veteran managers shattering the tournament’s previous age record.

In the visualization above, we show the profiles of 7 of the oldest coaches in the just-concluded tournament.

The data comes from Wikipedia, which tracked every coach at the 2026 World Cup. Their average was 71.7.

The trend shows that some federations lean on managers with decades of tactical knowledge and crisis-management skills rather than just younger, fresher tacticians.

TL;DR

  • Seven coaches at the 2026 World Cup were aged 66 or older during the tournament
  • Dick Advocaat, 78, was the oldest by four years. He was managing Curaçao, one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for a World Cup.
  • Two of the three oldest coaches after Advocaat were managing African national teams.

Gap at the Top

What makes Advocaat’s entry structurally unusual is the distance between him and everyone else.

Miroslav Koubek (Czechia) and Hugo Broos (South Africa) both sit at 74, four years behind.

The bottom five coaches in the group (from Carlos Queiroz at 73 to Carlo Ancelotti at 66) are separated by just seven years.

Advocaat’s four-year gap to second place is wider than the gap between second and seventh. He was not just the oldest coach at the 2026 World Cup.

He was in a category of his own.

The African Coaching Pattern

Two of the three oldest coaches after Advocaat were managing African national teams.

  • Hugo Broos, 74 and Belgian, led South Africa in their first World Cup appearance since they hosted the tournament in 2010.
  • Carlos Queiroz, 73 and Portuguese, managed Ghana

Their presence at the top of the age table is part of a broader pattern visible in the record: experienced older European coaches appointed to lead African nations at the biggest stage in the sport.

Queiroz alone has managed Portugal, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, and now Ghana at international level across a career spanning four decades.

The Youngest of the Oldest

Carlo Ancelotti, 66, was the youngest coach among the seven oldest managers at the tournament. He turned 67 as of June 10, 2026.

He was also managing Brazil, the most scrutinized, most pressure-laden job in international football.

His position at the bottom of this age table is almost misleading.

Sixty-six is the floor of a group whose average sits nearly six years higher, and yet the job he held carried more external weight than any other on the list.

 ELI5

At the 2026 World Cup, seven coaches were 66 years old or older, with an average age of nearly 72. The oldest was Dick Advocaat at 78, who was managing the tiny island nation of Curaçao. In a sport obsessed with youth, some of its biggest jobs were held by men old enough to be grandfathers.
