How Much the Planet Has Actually Warmed

The single most important number in climate science is also one of the most misunderstood. 

 

The planet has warmed a specific, measured amount, and both the figure and its speed tell the story.

 

TL;DR

 

  • In 2024, global temperature was between about 1.5°C and 1.6°C above pre-industrial levels, depending on the dataset. 
  • The current rate of warming is more than 0.2°C per decade, about ten times faster than the warming that ended the last ice age.
  • The last ten years have been the ten warmest on record.

 

The warming figures here come from the major climate-monitoring agencies and the IPCC.

The warming, and the speed

2024 was the first year with a global temperature clearly exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, with 11 months of the year above that threshold. 

 

But a single year is not the whole story, which is where the most common confusion arises. 

 

Why one year over 1.5°C is not the Paris limit

 

The Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target refers to a long-term average, not a single hot year. 

 

The most stringent Paris target refers to a 20-to-30-year average, so 2024 exceeding 1.5°C does not mean the limit has been breached. 

 

It does, however, mean the world is already brushing against the barrier, and at the current rate, breaching the 1.5°C target within the 2030s is highly likely.

What About America?

 

The warming shows up locally in ways that are not abstract at all. 

 

The same year that set the global record saw devastating wildfires in California and record heat across North America and Europe. 

 

The global number is the summary; the lived experience is the extreme weather it drives. And the speed is the alarming part. 

 

That is, warming ten times faster than natural historical shifts leaves ecosystems and societies far less time to adapt.
