Why the Same Crop Grows Far More in Some Countries, Explained

Plant the same crop in two different countries, and you can get wildly different harvests from the same hectare. 

 

That difference, the yield gap, is one of the most important and most solvable problems in global food.

 

TL;DR

 

  • Maize yields around 8 tonnes per hectare in the Americas and Oceania, about 5.5 tonnes per hectare in Asia, and only around 2 tonnes per hectare in Africa.
  • That is roughly a fourfold gap between the highest- and lowest-yielding regions for the same crop.
  • The gap is caused by access to improved seed, fertilizer, irrigation, and machinery, not by the land itself.

Same Crop; Very Different Harvests

 

 

African maize yields have stayed around 2 tonnes per hectare for two decades and grew just 16% between 2000 and 2020, the slowest of any region, while Asian yields rose 56%. 

 

The land in Africa is not four times worse. The inputs and infrastructure are.

Why the U.S. Sits at The Top

 

The United States is at or near the global yield frontier for maize, which is exactly why it can supply such a large share of world production from its farmland. 

 

That frontier is built on decades of investment: high-yield hybrid seed, precise fertilizer use, irrigation where needed, mechanization, and a research and extension system that pushes new methods to farmers. 

 

For U.S. and Canadian readers, the yield gap reframes their own agriculture as the benchmark that most of the world is measured against, and has not yet reached.

 

Why Closing the Gap is the Biggest Lever in Food

 

The yield gap is, in one sense, good news. 

 

It means the world could grow far more food on existing farmland without clearing a single new hectare, simply by helping lower-yielding regions catch up. 

 

Closing it is the central strategy for feeding a growing population while protecting forests and habitat. 

 

The obstacle is not an agronomic mystery. It is access to seed, fertilizer, finance, and knowledge.

If you plant the same corn in America and in parts of Africa, the American field can grow about four times as much. That is not because the African soil is bad. 

 

It is because American farmers have better seeds, fertilizer, water, and machines. Helping other regions catch up could grow much more food without using more land.
