Overview

Belgium is a country in Western Europe. It has borders with France, the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, and the North Sea. In 2024, Belgium had a population of about 11.8 million people. It is a federal constitutional monarchy, with Brussels as its capital and a major political center of the European Union. Administratively, Belgium is divided into 3 regions i.e Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels-Capital, 10 provinces, and 581 municipalities.

Agriculture

Its agriculture is highly intensive, dominated by livestock and specialized crop production. The northern region focuses on livestock, while the southern region focuses on large-scale cattle farming. Its major crops are cereal, sugar beets, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits.

Crime

Belgium is safe. Though it faces some local crime challenges such as drug-related violence, pickpocketing, and cybercrime. Its crime rate is lower than that of other countries, but other local crimes like bag snatching still exist.

Demographics

It is a diverse country with a population of about 11.8 million and 36% of residents having a foreign background. The country is also divided into Dutch-speaking Flangers, French-speaking Wallonias and Bilingual Brussels. Though the population is aging, it is also growing due to immigration.

Economy

This is a well developed, export driven and a free market system. It features strong services, advanced industry and a central trade hub role. It has challenges such as high debt, complex governance, as well as labour market rigidities. It relies on skilled workforce and location for growth.

Education

The educational system is highly structured into pre-primary, primary and secondary. Education is mandatory until age 15. It is managed by three communities which are; Flemish, French and German-speaking. Schools are either subsidized public, community-run or subsidized free.

Geography

Belgium is small and densely populated. It consists of three main regions which are; flat coastal plain, a rolling central plateau and the forested, hilly Ardennes uplands, where the landscape slowly rises.

Health

The healthcare in Belgium is universal and of high quality, funded by social security. It operates using the system of independent primary It offers compulsory insurance with 98% population coverage. It consists of direct access to specialists, free choice of doctors, and a combination of public and private providers. Additionally, residents are expected to register with a mutuelle or ziekenfonds to receive reimbursement for medical expenses.

Military

Called the Belgian Armed Forces, it is a professional NATO-Aligned military that is focused on international operations and modernization. It is divided into several components like land, air, cyber, navy and medical. It offers support for eastern flank defense. The force is currently carrying out equipment upgrade to strengthen European defense and peacekeeping.

Miscellaneous

This country is highly industrialized and culturally rich. It holds an important position in the EU and NATO headquarters. It consists of three language systems, which are; Dutch, French and German. It is highly urbanized and is the major processor of copper, lead and cobalt.

Religion

It’s mostly a christian society, with the largest domination being catholic. Though, some identify as non religious and the largest minority faith is islam. The country recognizes several religions such as Orthodox, Jewish, Protestant and Buddhist. Despite the support for religion, secularism is also strong, with a high rise in non-believers and atheists.

Weather

Its weather condition varies. Winter is usually cold, damp and foggy. Spring is usually mild, while summer has mild to warm weather with Autumn being cold and windy.
