Overview

South Korea is located in East Asia on the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It covers an area of about 100,000 km², with an estimated population of around 52 million people in 2024. South Korea is a democratic republic with Seoul as its capital. The key industries of this country include semiconductors, automobiles, shipbuilding and consumer electronics. The country is highly urbanized and mostly mountainous. It is administratively divided into 8 provinces, 6 metropolitan cities, 1 special city (Seoul), and 1 special autonomous province (Jeju).

Agriculture

The agricultural sector of South Korea is a small- scale and high-tech sector that is focused majorly in the production of rice. It has limited land and small farms as two-thirds of the country is mountainous. The country is investing in smart agriculture due to an aging population and to overcome shortage of labour.

Crime

The country has a high incidence of data breaches and ransomware Though, over the years, child abuse cases and drug-related cases among younger population have increased but general violent crime remains low.

Demographics

South Korea faces shrinkage in population as it has one of the world’s lowest fertility rates which is below 0.8. More than 20% of the population is over 65 years old. There is also a reduction in the working age population leading to labour shortage.

Economy

In 2025, South Korea had the 4th largest economy in Asia and the 14th largest globally. Its economy is worth $1.86 trillion as it is driven by electronics (especially semiconductors), shipbuilding, autos, petrochemicals, and steel.

Education

It features a 6-3-3-4 structure i.e elementary, middle, high school, university with compulsory elementary and middle school. Its educational system is known for rigorous and intense competition as it has an intense focus on academic performance. The system also emphasises on critical thinking and creativity rather than memorization.

Geography

About 70% of the land is filled with mountains. Taebaek Range runs north–south, and major rivers like the Han cross urban centers including Seoul, creating a rugged east coast and gentle west. The south and west of the country has an indented coastline with lots of islands.

Health

South Korea has an efficient and technology-driven healthcare system that handles regular check ups. It has good chronic disease management. Life expectancy is around 83 years which is one of the highest worldwide. However, there’s a critical shortage of doctors, especially in rural areas, contributing to ongoing healthcare disputes.

Military

The primary mission of the Republic of Korea armed forces is to reduce the North Korea tensions. However, manpower is declining with population shrinkage due to low birth rate, prompting increased emphasis on modernization.

South Korea has a dynamic culture such as bowing and late night dining. South Korea has a strong gaming culture and the country leads in high-speed internet penetration. Its key industries are electronics, textiles, autos, shipbuilding.

Religion

It is a religiously diverse nation. Though, more population is found in major traditions like Buddhism, Christianity, and Confucian cultural influence. Most South Koreans observe religious rituals culturally even if not formally affiliated.

Weather

This country has about four distinct seasons with hot, humid summers (monsoons) and cold, dry winters. Typhoons can sometimes affect coastal regions in late summer.
