Overview

China is a country in East Asia, bordering 14 countries. In 2024, China had an estimated population of approximately 1.41 billion people, though the population has been declining since 2022.
It is a single-party socialist state led by the Chinese Communist Party, with Beijing as its capital. It is divided into 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Chongqing), and 2 Special Administrative Regions (Hong Kong and Macau).

Agriculture

Agriculture accounts for roughly 7–8% of China’s GDP, as it’s the world’s largest producer of rice, wheat, potatoes, and pork. It relies more on intensive farming and advanced technology to get output. The southern and central regions are the agricultural heartland, whereas the northern regions face drought and desertification.

Crime

General crime levels in China are relatively low and decreasing. It is seen as one of the safest countries in East Asia with a low homicide rate. Violent crime rates are very low, though local statistics vary by region. Property crimes are the most common category in urban areas, while cybercrime and economic crime are growing concerns in the nation.

Demographics

China’s population is aging and recently declined for the fourth consecutive year, with the death rate above births. It is a rapidly aging society, with approximately 23% of the population aged 60+. The Han ethnic group accounts for 91% of the population, with 55 recognized ethnic minorities accounting for the remainder.

Economy

China has the world’s second-largest economy considering its nominal GDP of $19.6 trillion in 2025. It relies on services to drive the economy output, followed by manufacturing and a small agricultural share. Its trade tensions with the U.S. also help to shape its policy, while they push tech.

Education

China had 18,917,800 full-time teachers, marking an increase of 114,200, or 0.6%, from the previous year. In 2023, preschool education exceeded the established target with a 91.1% gross enrollment rate, showing an increase of 1.4 percentage points over the previous year. There were 274,400 kindergartens nationwide.

Geography

From the Himalayas and deserts in the west to fertile river deltas in the east, China has approximately 9.6 million square kilometers. Its landscape is surrounded by natural barriers such as the Gobi desert, the Pacific Ocean, and major rivers like the Yangtze and the Yellow.

Health

The healthcare system has 95% of the population insured by the government. Its focus is on primary, specialty and traditional Chinese medicine, targeting chronic diseases and improving rural resident access.

Military

China’s official defense budget increased by 7.2% for 2025, reaching around 1.78 trillion yuan (approximately $246 billion), continuing a trend of steady growth, though actual spending is believed to be significantly higher, with estimates ranging from $330 billion to over $450 billion when accounting for off-budget items like Reseach and Development (R&D), pensions, and paramilitary forces.

Miscellaneous

Women’s political participation in China is overwhelmingly low. A small proportion of women hold positions at higher levels or in key sectors. Most female leaders served in provincial governance and as vice ministers in the central government.

Religion

There’s no dominant religion in China. Many Chinese practice a blend of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, collectively known as Chinese folk religion. Other religions like Islam, Catholicism, and protestantism are under supervision and regulation by the communist party.

Weather

Due to its large size, China experiences diverse climatic conditions. Its general weather pattern consists of a hot, humid summer and a cold, dry winter, influenced by monsoon winds.
