The countries where men are most likely to lose their hair are overwhelmingly in Europe.

On the other hand, the countries where men are least likely to lose their hair are overwhelmingly in Asia.

This is based on data from a 2023 survey conducted by Medihair. 

It maps 47 countries by male hair loss prevalence as a percentage and ranks Spain, Italy, and France at the top.

The European Cluster

Fourteen of the top 20 countries for male hair loss prevalence are European.

Spain, Italy, and France top the list with rates above 44%. 

Germany follows fifth at 41.51%, Croatia sixth at 41.32%, the Czech Republic eighth at 40.90%, Norway tenth at 40.75%, New Zealand 11th at 40.19%, and the United Kingdom 12th at 40.09%.

The clustering is structural. 

European genetic lineages, particularly those associated with Mediterranean and Northern European ancestry, are associated with higher rates of androgenetic alopecia than genetic profiles that dominate East and Southeast Asian populations.

Croatia’s sixth-place ranking at 41.32% is the list’s most unexpected high entry.

The small Balkan nation outranks Canada (40.94%), Australia (40.80%), Norway, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. 

Its position in the top ten reflects the Balkan genetic profile’s proximity to the Mediterranean lineages that dominate the list’s upper tier.

Mexico And Saudi Arabia: An Exact Tie

Mexico and Saudi Arabia share an identical rate of 39.75%, placing them jointly 14th.

Two countries with entirely different genetic profiles (one shaped by Indigenous and Spanish heritage, the other by Arab lineage).

produce the same hair-loss prevalence figure via completely different biological pathways. 

It is the only exact tie and its most structurally surprising pairing.

Why Asia Sits At The Bottom

Indonesia ranks last at 26.96%, followed by Colombia (27.04%), the Philippines (28.00%), Malaysia (29.24%), and Argentina (29.35%). 

East and Southeast Asian populations have lower rates of androgenetic alopecia due to differences in 5-alpha reductase activity and androgen receptor sensitivity (the two primary biological mechanisms that drive male pattern baldness). 

Lower enzyme activity means less conversion of testosterone to the hormone that triggers hair follicle miniaturization.

China ranks 42nd at 30.81% and India 29th at 34.06%.

Both sit in the lower half of the ranking. 

But both countries have enormous male populations. 

At those rates, the absolute number of affected men in China and India individually exceeds the entire male population of every European country on this list.

Men in European countries, especially Spain, Italy, and France, are more likely to experience hair loss than men anywhere else in the world.
