In the visualization above, we used data from Ethnologue to present the world’s most spoken languages by number of speakers.

The data shows that English undisputedly leads all languages with 1.49 billion total speakers in 2026, but approximately 1.1 billion of those speakers were not born into it.

Chinese Mandarin ranks second at 1,183 million total speakers despite having more native speakers than any other language.

Three of the world’s ten most spoken languages originate from South Asia: Hindi (3rd, 611 million), Bengali (7th, 274 million), and Urdu (10th, 246 million).
