When a headline announces that Finland is once again the happiest country, it is easy to picture researchers measuring smiles.
That is not what happens.
The ranking rests on people’s own life ratings, and then on six factors researchers use to explain why those ratings differ.
Understanding those six ingredients is the difference between reading the happiness rankings as a mystery and reading them as a recipe.
TL;DR
- The happiness ranking itself comes from people rating their own lives on a scale of 0 to 10, not from the six factors.
- Six factors are then used to explain the differences between countries: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.
- Only one of the six, income, is directly economic, which is why wealth alone does not determine a country’s happiness.
The data is anchored to the World Happiness Report, published by Gallup and the Oxford Wellbeing Research Center.

The score versus the explanation
This is the point where most coverage gets muddled.
A country’s rank is determined solely by how its residents rate their own lives on the 0-to-10 Cantril Ladder, averaged over three years.
The six factors are not the score.
They are the variables researchers use afterward to explain why, say, Finland sits so far above the global average.
Think of the ladder score as the result and the six factors as the analysis of what drives it.
Why only one factor is about money
Of the six, only GDP per capita is directly economic.
The other five, social support, health, freedom, generosity, and freedom from corruption, are about the texture of a society and the quality of relationships within it.
This is the statistical reason wealth alone does not buy a top ranking.
A rich country low on trust or high on corruption can still score poorly, while a middle-income country strong on connection and freedom can climb.
That’s exactly the Costa Rica story from a previous story published.

A country’s happiness ranking is based on asking people to rate their own lives from 0 to 10.
Then researchers use six factors to explain the differences, such as income, health, freedom, and how much people trust one another and help one another.
Only one of those six is about money, which is why rich countries do not automatically win.
