It is baked into watches, phones, and the guilt of anyone who ends the day at 9,200.
The number feels scientific, official, almost medical.
It is none of those things. The 10,000-steps goal began as a piece of 1960s marketing, and the research that came later tells a more forgiving and more useful story.

Born in a marketing office
The story starts in 1965, in the afterglow of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, when a Japanese company called Yamasa launched an early pedometer.
They named it the Manpo-kei, which translates to “10,000-step meter.”
The character for 10,000 even loosely resembles a walking figure, which made for a tidy logo.
As Harvard epidemiologist I-Min Lee has put it, there were no studies behind the number at the time. It was chosen because it sounded good and was easy to remember.
A round number on a box became a global health commandment.
What the research actually found
When scientists who were not selling pedometers finally studied step counts, the answer kept landing below 10,000.
A 2023 meta-analysis pooling 17 studies and more than 226,000 people found that a lower risk of death was observed with as few as roughly 4,000 steps a day, with risk continuing to fall as steps rose.
A 2019 study of nearly 16,741 older women, led by Lee, found mortality benefits leveling off around 7,500 steps.
The pattern is one of diminishing returns.
More movement is generally better, but the steepest gains come early, and pace and consistency matter as much as the raw total.
Why this is good news
The most useful takeaway is that 10,000 is not a pass-fail line.
It is a fine aspirational target, but it was never a scientific threshold, and treating it as one turns healthy movement into a source of failure.
Meaningful benefits start much lower than most people believe.
