Every person on Earth gets the same allowance: 24 hours a day, 8,760 hours a year.
How we spend that fixed budget is one of the most revealing aspects of how we live, and the data show both striking universals and big differences.
TL;DR
- The average American sleeps about 8.5 hours, works about 3.5 hours, including commute time, spends about 3 hours on screens, and 1.5 hours eating.
- After sleep, work, and required chores, the average adult has roughly 4 to 5 hours of free time on a weekday and 6 to 7 on a weekend.
- Sleep, work, and watching TV together make up the bulk of the average day.
The time-use figures here come from the OECD Time Use Database and the US American Time Use Survey.

One honest caveat: these are population averages spread across everyone, including retirees, students, and weekends, which is why “work” looks low.
A full-time worker puts in far more on a working day; the average simply blends the whole population together.
Why the pattern is universal but the balance isn’t
The remarkable thing is how similar the basic pattern is worldwide: everyone sleeps, works, eats, and seeks leisure.
What differs is the balance.
Wealthier nations tend to offer more leisure time and less time spent working, while in countries under greater economic pressure, people spend more of the day working to make ends meet.
So the day’s structure is human and universal, but how much of it is free versus obligated tracks closely with a country’s wealth and working culture.
ELI5
Everyone gets 24 hours. On average, people spend about 8 to 9 of them sleeping, a few working, about 3 on screens, and the rest eating and relaxing.
The pattern is similar everywhere, but people in richer countries usually get a bit more free time.
