The global e-commerce market welcomed the Chinese-owned online retailer Temu in 2022.
Ever since then, the platform has ‘paid its way’ to becoming one of the biggest online shopping platforms in the world today.
Questions remain about Temu’s potential to become the next Amazon.
TL;DR
- Temu peaked at 2.11 billion website visits in June 2025, settling to 1.8 billion by October of the same year.
- Its gross merchandise value jumped from $3 million in late 2022 to about $40.9 billion in 2025, moving roughly $112 million in goods daily.
- The U.S. accounts for about one-third of traffic, while Europe has 92 million users.
- Still, not anywhere close to Amazon’s market dominance.
By mid-2025, Temu had amassed over 416 million monthly active users and racked up a mind-bending 2.11 billion website visits in June alone.
As of October 2025, it has had 1.8 billion visits.
For a company that started as a cross-border marketplace peddling low-priced goods from Chinese manufacturers, that’s an extraordinary rise.

Temu launched in September 2022 with only $3 million in monthly gross merchandise value (GMV), growing to approximately $290 million for the whole year.
In 2024, Temu’s actual GMV reached $70.8 billion, which significantly exceeded earlier projections of $29.5-30 billion.
The 2025 $40.9 billion is based on an older projection made in early 2024, which has likely been revised upward given that 2024 results exceeded expectations by more than double.
This kind of acceleration doesn’t happen often.
Even TikTok, known for its viral power, took longer to reach a comparable user base. In 2023 alone, Temu reportedly generated around $3 billion in revenue in its first half-year of operations, a run rate of about $6 billion annually.
The magic ingredient was low prices and aggressive marketing.

Temu’s rise has not been limited to a single continent. Its earliest success came in the United States, which still accounts for roughly one-third of its global traffic, or around 609 million visits per month in September 2025.
The brand’s catchy “Shop Like a Billionaire” campaign and its 2023 Super Bowl ad blitz helped it break into American mainstream culture almost overnight.
But Temu didn’t stop there. It expanded to Europe, where it now serves around 92 million users, and then to Latin America, where downloads have grown by 148 percent year over year.

Temu’s surge in downloads is another data point hinting at its viral power.
Much of this came from relentless advertising across TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, combined with referral rewards that turned users into mini-marketers.
Ad Spend
A MediaRadar study reports cumulative advertising spending of $5.17 billion from September 2022 through late 2023.
However, recent data shows that Temu is now relying less on paid advertising and more on organic discovery, word of mouth, and repeat customers.
There’s a dramatic shift in Temu’s ad spending due to Trump administration tariffs, with Temu cutting US advertising by approximately 90% starting in April 2025.
What Will Happen to Temu Next?
If its current momentum holds, Temu could end 2025 with close to half a billion active users and total sales volume above $40 billion.
But sustaining that pace will require more than flashy discounts.
Temu’s user acquisition and marketing strategy is also highly aggressive, to the point where some may say it’s exploitative.
Shipping costs, regulatory pressures, and thin margins could test the model. Building local supply chains is costly, and consumer novelty wears off fast in digital retail.
ELI5
Temu has exploded to 416.5 million monthly active users and over 2.1 billion visits as of mid-2025.
Temu doesn’t compete with Amazon’s Prime subscribers, who buy electronics and groceries. It competes for the impulse buyer who finds a $2 necklace or $3 slippers irresistible at 2 a.m.
