ChatGPT Dominates AI Chatbots in Africa

ChatGPT’s overwhelming lead suggests it has become synonymous with artificial intelligence across most of Africa.

Its accessibility, ease of use, and wide popularity on social media have made it the go-to chatbot for millions of users.

The platform’s freemium model has also played a major role in its spread across countries where many people prefer free or low-cost digital tools.

The dominance isn’t entirely surprising.

Africa’s internet ecosystem is driven by mobile access (about 77% of internet traffic in Africa comes from mobile devices, according to Semrush), and ChatGPT’s lightweight web interface makes it easy to use on smartphones without requiring downloads or complex integrations.

Across all continents, ChatGPT remains dominant. These figures are for the same review period in 2025.

However, among all continents, Microsoft Copilot holds the largest market share in Africa at 6.99%.

This share is likely driven by enterprise and education users, given its integration into Microsoft 365 tools such as Word, Excel, and Teams.

It appeals more to corporate or institutional users than to individuals seeking general assistance.

A Market Still Taking Shape

Africa’s AI chatbot market is still young, and its growth reflects the continent’s broader digital transformation.

The internet penetration rate is growing at 28% annually, and smartphone penetration is expected to reach 81% in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030, according to GSMA.

These structural shifts suggest that the chatbot market will grow both in size and diversity over the next decade.

ChatGPT’s current dominance gives it a head start.

Still, history in African tech markets shows that early leaders don’t always remain unchallenged (just as Facebook now faces intense competition from TikTok across the same regions).

In a looser interpretation, for every 100 Africans using chatbots today, about 84 are using ChatGPT, while the rest are split among five other players.
